I have mixed feelings about on-call rotations. On one hand it should fall on a designated team. On the other hand being on an on-call rotation gives one an opportunity to learn way more than usual day to day. I have definitely learned more than I normally would about other parts of the company or even other corners of the IT org.
People are usually divided between camps manager on-call and no manager on-call. I used to think I was camp #2 but I am definitely starting to see the benefits of #1.
