One of the annual traditions for fall before Covid used to be apple tasting at Portland nursery. They still sell the apples in the fall but there are no longer long queues of folks wanting to taste different varieties, apple strudel or caramel apples. I picked up a big bag of apples and pears of non-supermarket varieties on Saturday after a hike near Mt Hood and made the first apple cake of the season. It’s amazing what simple ingredients of butter, sugar, eggs, sour cream and flour topped with sliced apples can produce.
