Week Notes Vol 196
February 05, 2023
Over the past months there have been layoffs at large tech companies. Every day delivered news of company x laying some percentage of people off because of overhiring during Covid pandemic. I didn’t think it would reach my corner of the world, but yet here we are this week with a large chunk of people I used to work with gone without much notice.
Layoffs are distruptive and create stress not only for those let go but also for survivors. To quote the author of the book I am reading:
Academic studies have shown that time and time again, workplace reductions don’t do much for paring costs. Severance packages cost money, layoffs increase unemployment insurance rates, and cuts reduce workplace morale and productivity as remaining employees are left wondering, “Could I be fired too?”
