Week Notes Vol 201

March 11, 2023

2022 taxes are finally done. All together it took two weekends and two evenings - gathering documents, entering data, emailing my CPA. All total maybe 30 hours to cover regular salary, side hustle and investments. I don’t think my taxes are that complex but yet it took me 180x more time than it would in Estonia.

I have been told more than once that I have a nasty habit of optimizing. I see it as a positive rather than negative. It is little things like setting myself reminders to do some tasks with frequency (like watering the house plants or changing air filters) to bigger things like automating my investments and paying someone to do the analysis to having templates for a lot of the things I do as a manager - 1:1 meetings, annual reviews, promotion prep, monthly financials tracking etc.

Why do I keep doing my own taxes when I hate the time that goes into it? Because it is part of my journey to FI and without the details it would be just a dream not a possible reality.
