Week Notes Vol 53

May 10, 2020

This week I’ve been watching endless Youtube videos about hiking the PCT. And doing research on supplies, gear, timing and cost. There are even articles out there about packing methods.

I took my new ultralight backpack out for a trial run last weekend and it fared well. It’s Deuter Speed Lite 30 SL Pack to replace my old Gregory Amber 34. Portland sunset

My old Gregory was fine but it weighs 3 lbs. 1 oz when it is empty compared to Deuter’s 1lb 14 oz. It looked and felt full even with nothing in it. Yes, the size difference is 6 liters but it feels like a night and day on a proper hike (proper meaning more than 5 miles). In addition volume to weight ratio of my new pack is the best one I’ve ever had. I had some interesting moments with Gregory in slot canyons where it was just too big and I had to take it off to fit through.

The only feature I miss about Gregory is its hip belt pockets - Deuter’s are much smaller in comparison. My new pack definitely needs more testing but fingers crossed it does not give me collarbone bruises like the Gregory does.
