As I hit “delete” yet on another recruitment email I wonder if recruiters are aware why their success rate drops in late January / early February? If they paid more attention to context they’d realize that in a lot of companies it is time for performance reviews.

I got mine done a few hours before the deadline but I learned a few cruicial lessons along the way:

  1. Don’t plan a major release close to review due date or block out dedicated time to focus.
  2. Ask team members to pre-plan their reviews in late December instead of after Christmas break.
  3. Remind people to keep track of their accomplishments throughout the year. It is especially useful for women who end to downplay their achievements.
